Linking research and patient care

Who are we working with?

The Victorian Cancer Agency has established working relationships with the following organisations.

The Cancer Council Victoria (CCV)

http://www.cancervic.org.au/

The core business of the CCV is cancer control. The CCV conducts and supports research, as well as delivering State-wide support and prevention programs. In addition, the CCV provides strong advocacy to reduce the physical and emotional burden of cancer, and is committed to the promotion of cancer clinical trials in Victoria.

The Victorian Cancer Agency and The CCV have recently drawn up a Memorandum of Understanding to record the Parties’ commitment to working together to improve cancer research capacity and capability in Victoria, to define the roles and responsibilities of the Agency and The CCV, and to establish protocols in relation to specific operational matters.

The Integrated Cancer Services (ICS)

 www.health.vic.gov.au/cancer

The ICS are a Victorian Government initiative developed to provide an integrated approach to service quality improvement and patient care. This focuses on delivering the right treatment and support to patients, as early as possible in their cancer journey. The ICS are formal partnerships between health services that aim to improve the planning and delivery of cancer care so that it is coordinated, appropriate and effective. The role of the ICS is to:

  • Build relationships between providers, health services and settings
  • Improve cancer care through quality improvement processes
  • Plan cancer services across a geographic area based on access, appropriateness and effectiveness.

The Victorian Breast Cancer Research Consortium (VBCRC)

www.cancervic.org.au/vbcrc/

Established in 1997 by the Victorian Government, the VBCRC is a consortium formed between eight Melbourne medical research institutes and the CCV. The VBCRC aims to conduct world class research into fundamental and translational aspects of breast cancer.

The Victorian Prostate Cancer Research Consortium (VPCRC)

www.vpcrc.org.au

The Victorian Prostate Cancer Research Consortium (VPCRC) is a dedicated research-based consortium established in 2008.  It incorporates the majority of prostate cancer researchers in the state and will foster strategic partnerships between these researchers to link cancer research with clinical practice.

The Victorian Cancer Biobank (VCB)

www.viccancerbiobank.org.au

The Biobank is a not-for-profit consortium supported by the CCV and the Victorian Government. The Consortium members are Austin Health, Melbourne Health, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Southern Health. Each member site collects blood, tissue and some clinical and pathology data from consenting patients diagnosed with cancer across all tumour streams. Through a centralised application process, the Biobank provides high quality, clinically annotated tissue and biospecimens to researchers from the academic and private sectors within Australia and internationally.

Biogrid Australia

www.biogrid.org.au

Biogrid Australia was formerly named Bio21: Molecular Medicine Informatics Model. This platform provides clinical researchers access to data from disparate existing databases across multiple disease types at multiple institutions, creating a federation of data - a virtual repository, which can be linked with publicly available research and genetic data.

The Australian Cancer Grid is the flagship of the expansion of this platform. The focus is to provide cancer researchers with data on the clinical and surgical outcomes in the various types of cancer as well as to the tumour biospecimens which cancer patients have donated for research purposes.

The Centre for Palliative Care Education & Research (CPCER)

www.pallcare.unimelb.edu.au

The CPCER is part of St Vincent's Hospital and is affiliated with The University of Melbourne through the Department of Medicine at St Vincent's and the School of Nursing. The Centre has a state-wide role in palliative care education and research.  It provides programs and services in its own right and in association with a range of other organisations involved in the education, research and delivery of palliative care programs.

Cancer Australia

www.canceraustralia.gov.au

The Australian Government has established Cancer Australia to help reduce the impact of cancer for all Australians. Its key role is to provide national leadership in cancer control and improve coordination of, and collaboration between, all stakeholders, including people affected by cancer, health professionals, researchers, cancer and other community organisations, and governments.

Cancer Trials Australia (CTA)

www.cancertrialsaustralia.com

The members are currently four Melbourne teaching hospitals and two research institutes with international reputations for first class cancer research and treatment. Originally established in 1993 as the Centre for Developmental Cancer Therapeutics, Cancer Trials Australia is now Australia's premier early phase cancer trials group.
