Established funding

The Agency manages a range of established funding commitments on behalf of the Victorian Government. The Agency has also awarded strategic funding in key areas of interest.

Rural clinical trials initiative

The Cancer Council Victoria manages the Clinical Trials Management Scheme. This scheme was established in 1988 to provide grants for the appointment of hospital-based clinical trial coordinators. The Victorian Government, through the Victorian Cancer Agency, contributes $195,000 per annum to the Rural Clinical Trials Initiative as part of this scheme. This funding is used to fund clinical trial staff working in regional areas, and also staff in metropolitan areas working with rural patients.

Victorian Breast Cancer Research Consortium

Since 1997, the Victorian State Government has awarded $30 million to the establishment and support of the Victorian Breast Cancer Research Consortium (VBCRC). This funding was granted over 10 years, until September 2007.

An additional $2.25 million was announced through the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development Healthy Futures: Life Sciences Statement. This funding is administered by the Victorian Cancer Agency.

Victorian Prostate Cancer Research Consortium

In 2006 the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development announced a similar initiative to the VBCRC, for research into prostate cancer.

The Victorian Cancer Agency has provided funding and assistance in the establishment of the Victorian Prostate Cancer Research Consortium (VPCRC).

A capacity and capability building project

Cancer Trials Australia was awarded $230,000 by the Victorian Cancer Agency in 2006 to expand its clinical trial infrastructure and capacity to include new members in metropolitan and regional Victoria.

CTA is not-for-profit organisation that was established in 1993 and currently coordinates clinical trial management across four Melbourne teaching hospitals and two research institutes. See our media releases for more information.
