The Victorian Cancer Agency will call for applications for research funding in March 2010 in the categories below. The Agency plans to hold the same funding opportunities in 2011 also.

The Agency seeks applications from a range of agencies, such as: 

  • Victorian Universities
  • Cancer Services
  • Hospitals
  • Regional hospitals and health services
  • Any other relevant agency

Research Fellowship

The aims of the Victorian Cancer Agency Research Fellowships are to:

  • develop the future leaders of cancer research in Victoria
  • support clinical research by providing opportunities for clinicians to develop and sustain a career in cancer research, and
  • attract and/or retain the best cancer researchers with significant research potential to Victoria.

These grants aim to increase the pool of clinician-researchers working directly on clinical problems. There are three categories, designed to increase capacity in the areas of clinical research, palliative and supportive care research and public health research as it relates to cancer.

Palliative and Supportive Care Scholarhsip

One of the priority areas for the Victorian Cancer Agency is building cancer research capacity and capability in the field of supportive care, palliative care and survivorship in cancer. To address this priority, the Agency is offering Palliative and Supportive Care Research Scholarships.

In 2010 there will be 3 scholarships offered in this category. Palliative and Supportive Care Scholarships are aimed at increasing the number of researchers that are able to conduct high quality research into palliative care, supportive care and survivorship.

Early Career Seed Grants

 

Victorian Cancer Agency Early Career Seed Grants are designed to support early career researchers undertaking high quality translational cancer research. The grants provide seed funding to encourage and retain talented individuals in the field of cancer research in Victoria. The objectives of the Early Career Seed Grants are to:

  • Support high quality cancer research conducted by early career researchers who are able to demonstrate clear evidence of translational research capacity
  • Provide limited seed funding as a means of enhancing competitiveness of early career researchers to enable leverage of further funding from granting bodies or industry

Palliative and Supportive Care Capacity Building Grants

Palliative and Supportive Care Capacity Building Grants are aimed at providing one-off seed funding for infrastructure that will support cancer research. This may include:

  • Physical infrastructure
  • Salary support to enable time to be dedicated to research
  • Staffing requirements
  • Training and education of staff
  • ‘Other’ areas as identified by applicants that directly relate to research in supportive care, palliative care and survivorship that meet the generic and criteria of the Victorian Cancer Agency.

Consumer Grants

One of the priority areas for the Victorian Cancer Agency is developing the role of consumers in building cancer research capacity and capability in Victoria. To address this priority, the Agency is offering three Consumer Grants for 2010.

The Victorian Cancer Agency Consumer Grant is designed to promote significant consumer involvement in translational cancer research. This may be through direct research by consumers or by facilitating consumer involvement for existing researchers.

The grant is designed to be flexible—for example, the grant may be used for:

  •  Training or education of Consumers
  • Salary or participation costs to involve consumers in design or completion of translational cancer research projects
  • Development of tools to assist consumer participation in research
