Consultative Council

The Victorian Cancer Agency is a Consultative Council to the Minister for Health, the Hon. Daniel Andrews. The Council drives and directs the work of the Agency.

Professor Daine Alcorn
Pro Vice Chancellor, Research & Innovation Portfolio, RMIT University.
Professor Alcorn's research is in the area of renal development, structure and function. She has extensive experience of working on a wide range of boards and committees locally and nationally.

Professor David Bowtell
Director of Research, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
Professor Bowtell's research focuses on intracellular signaling and the application of these studies to human cancers, particularly ovarian cancer. He is the Principal Investigator for the Australian Ovarian Cancer Study, has established a genomic technology centre at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and is a member of a number of national and international scientific and medical boards.

Professor Tony Burgess
Director, Ludwig Institute of Cancer Research in Melbourne.
Professor Burgess's major research interest is in the epidermal growth factor receptor family and the role of these receptors in cancer. He has previously carried out much research into granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor (now an established cancer treatment). He is involved in numerous medical research committees, is chairperson of CSIRO's P-Health Advisory Committee and was a member of the Victorian Government Ministerial Taskforce for Cancer.

Dr Anne Fletcher
Director, Growing your Knowledge.
Dr Fletcher's career has spanned the scientific and health care sectors, specialising in blood transfusion and biotechnology. She holds positions locally, nationally and internationally on peak professional bodies and has an active interest in management research and governance.

Professor Peter Fuller
Head, Endocrinology Unit, Southern Health, and Head, Steroid Receptor Biology Laboratory, Prince Henry's Institute.
Professor Fuller is a clinician and an NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow whose research interest is in the field of molecular endocrinology and endocrine malignancy. He is an Executive Committee Member and a Medical and Scientific Committee member for the Cancer Council Victoria, and was also a member of the Victorian Government Ministerial Taskforce for Cancer.

Dr Shirley Lanning
Director, Business Development and Commercialisation, Watermark Patent and Trade Attorneys.
Dr Lanning has worked in diverse roles across the UK and Australian life sciences sector, most recently, as a consultant advising research organisations, companies and government on strategy, corporate communications, grant funding and raising capital.

Mr Les Leckie
Community representative.
Mr Leckie is a community representative and regular speaker at cancer forums locally and nationally. He has a strong commitment to making a difference on committees, and currently works within the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development.

Dr Errol Malta
Biotechnology drug development consultant.
Dr Malta is currently a board member for two Australian biotechnology companies and consultant to a number of biotechnology companies in early phase product development in cancer and other therapeutic areas. He has been involved in cancer clinical trials and drug development for over 18 years, most notably as Product Development Team Leader at Amgen in the USA and as Director of Scientific Affairs for Amgen Australia.

Ms Maureen O'Keefe
General Manager, The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research.
Ms O'Keefe has a strong background in academic and scientific administration, and policy.

Professor Bryan Williams
Director, Monash Institute for Medical Research, and Head, Centre for Cancer Research.
Professor Williams' research focuses on the molecular biology of tumour suppression and the role tumour suppressor genes may play in regulating cell growth, maturation and apoptosis. He is a member of various local and national committees and was a member of the Victorian Government Ministerial Taskforce for Cancer.

Professor Ingrid Winship
Inaugural Chair, Adult Clinical Genetics, University of Melbourne, and Head, Adult Genetic Service, Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Professor Winship is Research Director for Melbourne Health and Deputy Chair of the Cancer Council Victoria's Co-operative Oncology Group (VCOG), as well as being Chair of the VCOG Cancer Genetics Advisory Group.

Professor John Zalcberg
Director, Division of Haematology and Medical Oncology, and Chief Medical Officer, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

Professor Zalcberg is a clinician with a research background in both basic and clinical research. He maintains an active clinical practice in gastrointestinal oncology and is a founding member, and the current Chair, of the Australasian Gastrointestinal Trials Group. He is a member of various cancer related boards and committees, locally and nationally.
